In the United States, the origins of Father’s Day lie in a memorial service held for a group of men who were killed in a mining accident in 1907. By 1909, a lady named Sonora Smart Dodd, who along with her five brothers were inspired by Mother’s Day, and sought to establish an equivalent holiday for fathers. The nation’s first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington.
